Urban farming
An app for Stockholm city to gather the different urban gardens in one place. Find your friends through the map function, get information about different plants and have your own profile.
Results
A digital application with collected urban gardens in an area, which will simulate assignments from the City of Stockholm. The urban gardening app is aimed at young adults who are beginners in gardening. The prototype enables community building and a sustainable way to grow their food. The app enables urban gardeners to join new urban gardens, as well as find new friends to hang out with. The app contributes to increased community, better health and biodiversity.
Problem
The target group's problem was that there was a lack of a digital service, and that there were many different needs and behaviors. The City of Stockholm also had problems finding a solution to promote urban farming, while at the same time wanting to analyze and investigate how the digital service could contribute to this.
Process
At the beginning of the development of the prototype, two different storyboards were created focusing on the role it could have in a user's life. This gave an insight into how to meet new people and what features the target group has. The storyboards gave us in the group inspiration for what future features could be included in the app.
Next, an affinity diagram was created to lump together different ideas on post-it notes and sort them to see similarities and differences among the thoughts of users we had interviewed. We were then able to determine which problems were most important to address. Then, as a group, we were able to decide how to apply the problems and wishes in our development process for our upcoming app.
Based on interviews with the target group, we in the group were able to start sketching and getting ideas about the app's main functions. We then focused on wireframing to be able to show ideas that the app's appearance could have but also prioritize the most important functions. The wireframing and the app were done in the tool Figma.
Lessons
The main lessons learned from the project were to create an app using the needs of the target group based on interviews. However, brainstorming, various diagrams and other methods also proved to be important in creating a solution that is in line with the users' and the municipality's wishes for a digital artifact.
